Compassionate communication talk offered

Kuikahi Mediation Center hosts a free talk on “Compassionate Communication” for greater connection and understanding with speaker Malae Erickson from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.

Kuikahi’s “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace” Brown Bag Lunch Series is free and open to the public. Talks are held on the third Thursday of each month in the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 655 Kilauea Avenue in Hilo.

Preschool financial assistance discussed

Lehua Kaulukukui of Kamehameha Schools will offer information about the Pauahi Keiki Scholars program. The talks will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Hawaii Montessori Schools Kona campus and at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 29 at the Waimea Montessori campus.

Children born in 2011, 2012 and 2013 may qualify for financial assistance through Pauahi Keiki Scholars, which helps families with tuition costs so they can send their children to a preschool from Kamehmeha School’s collaborating schools list.

King Kamehameha Day parade entries sought

Preparations are underway for the annual King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade slated June 11 in Kailua-Kona.

Registration is open to groups and individuals who want to be in the parade, including marching bands, floats, vehicles, hula halau and equestrian units. Volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are also sought.

For entry guidelines or to download a registration application, visit www.konaparade.org. All entries are subject to approval of the parade committee, and must not be political or blatantly advertorial. Equestrian participants must have basic horsemanship skills.

It begins at 9 a.m. at Walua Road and Alii Drive and travels through Kailua Village via Alii Drive to Palani Road, past the pier. A hoolaulea music and art festival will follow the parade at Hulihee Palace.

American Association of University Women meets

The Kona branch of American Association of University Women will hold a general meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hawaii Community College — Palamanui. The meeting includes a campus tour and presentation on campus programs by Carrie Kuwada-Phipps.

Members, guests and those interested in joining AAUW are invited. During the meeting, the Shape Future campaign will offer a reduction in dues to new members.

Cancer support group meets

A cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Teshima’s restaurant in Honalo. People newly diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors are welcome, as are caregivers and family members.

Veteran fishing group started in Hilo

The Hilo Vet Center has started a veteran fishing group that meets at 3 p.m. every Tuedsay at the center. On Tuesday, an education officer for the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Aquatics Division will give a brief on fishing in Hawaii.

Culinary scholarships offered

Merriman’s is accepting applications for three $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to graduating seniors or students attending Hawaii Community College at Hilo, Hawaii Community College Palamanui, Maui Community College or Kauai Community College who are in need of financial aid. Students must enroll full time with a food service program.

Those interested should see their school counselor. Deadline to apply is May 13.
